|Experience counts at Marshall Country Club.|
The golf course has been around for almost a century in the quaint town of Marshall, where you can still shop at the hardware store on main street or admire the Victorian architecture.
Gabe Beronja, the head professional golfer at the club, loves to hear old stories from golfers.
“The club has been a staple in the Marshall community since 1922 and that history is special to us,” Beronja said in an email. “We have longtime members that know a ton of the history of the club and have stories that many love to hear.”
One of the perks of being a head professional golfer is an office with a view — Beronja can see out onto the course from his desk. Across the greens, there are elevation changes, ponds, views of the lakes and outstanding native areas.
Beronja has some stories of his own. His love of golf has a deep family connection. “I played my first round of golf with my dad and my next one with my dad and grandfather,” he said. “I was hooked on the competition and the challenge of the game. I now have kids of my own and love the fact that I can teach them the game I love and enjoy time with them on the driving range and golf course.”
Marshall Country Club is suitable for multi-generational groups, because it’s easy to adjust to your skill level. There are seven sets of tees, from 6,578 yards to 4,124 yards.
“We hope the course offers golfers excellent conditions, smooth fast greens and shots that they remember for years to come,” Beronja said.
The hole that everyone talks about is the 11th hole, a par three that plays 168 yards downhill over a pond to a large green with some subtle elevation changes. The trees around the tee frame the first shot and the pond in front of the green offers a great view and some intimidation.
“The people that play golf all have amazing stories as to how they came to the game and their best shots or rounds that they will always remember,” Beronja said. “I have had the privilege to meet some amazing people while in the business and cherish the relationships, especially at a private club where the members and staff become like a family.”
Don’t let “private club” put you off from visiting — the course has tee times available to nonmembers and Kelli Beattie, our Southern Swing sales associate, can hook you up.
